The English as a Second Language (ESL) learners probably think that listening is very easy. But on the contrast, these English learners and foreigners in the United States still struggle following native English speakers. They complain that the English speakers are always talking too fast or using too many slang words for them to follow. In fact, these English language learners just do not have the skill training to understand how to listen correctly like native English people. Many of these learners believe they only have to listen word-by-word to follow. Unfortunately, this way will NOT help teach you how to fully follow the English speaking speed or to comprehend English people too much. So, they hide their English problems by pretending they understand when in fact they really do not.
